Key Stage Two

Welcome to Key Stage Two

Welcome to Key Stage 2. Key Stage 2 consists of Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

We work in Learning Zones which are open plan to allow opportunities to develop creativity and collaboration across the curriculum. We continuously promote oracy opportunities to develop analytical and critical thinking which creates a vibrant busy atmosphere which children love to learn in.

We have a Year 3/ 4 Learning Zone and a Year 5/6 Learning Zone which are separated into 3 classes per Zone with a capacity of 90 pupils (45 per year group). Each group of 30 children have their own allocated class teacher.

Over the course of the term, there is an over-arching QUESTION that we are investigating such as WHAT ARE THE MYSTERIES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD?

Each Termly Question is broken down into curriculum subjects with specific objectives to be delivered. Key Influencers are planned for ensuring the children are introduced to a variety of people who have influenced that area of study. This was introduced as children told us that they “are especially interested in learning about people”. We take the opportunity to promote diversity and inclusion when choosing these influencers.

Days are vibrant, and to allow the teaching of small maths groups the children have daily independent work time which is built around a BIG QUESTION of the week. This is planned to allow all children to access the answer at their own challenge level and respond in a creative way. The outcomes of these questions are a mixture of written work, interactive and verbal presentations and artwork.

Maths is taught daily in individual year groups being taught objectives for their academic year. We base our Maths planning on Herts for Learning Mathematics progression documents.

English is taught in Class Bases and follows our Whole School English Plan to ensure the coverage of different genres. We use The Write Stuff unit plans to develop skills in writing. In Reading, we teach the core skills of comprehension across themed texts using whole class texts. This is supplemented by interventions to support children who require additional support with fluency and reading skills. Spelling is taught on a two-week cycle where in week 1 teaching is explicit to break down the words, explore rules and apply skills and during week 2 the children follow up with independent spelling activities.

On a weekly basis, the children are expected to read every day and complete Times Table Rockstars. The children are set weekly maths homework to reinforce skills taught in school.

Children’s learning is enhanced with a range of opportunities to go on trips and visits, both locally and further afield, and to work with specialist visitors.  In Year 4, the children will experience a day of adventurous activities and then in Year 6, children will have the opportunity to go on a residential trip for two nights.  These trips help to broaden children’s experiences, develop confidence, strengthen relationships with their peers and challenge themselves.

During the year, there are numerous opportunities for parents to come into class, to work with their children, give their views and learn more about the school.  An example of this is Come to Understand, the aim being to share with parents and carers our approach to teaching an aspect of learning so they can better support their childrenParents are welcome at any events, but not expected to come to all.

Before, during and after school, children can attend a wide range of extracurricular activities.  These include singing club, running club, art club, Forest School club and football club, the latter of which often leads to representing the school in inter-school competitions.  All KS2 children go swimming as part of their P.E provision.

As they progress through Key Stage 2, children have more opportunities to take on more responsibility in school. Every year, there is the opportunity to become A Champion of Change who are representatives for their class and work towards a key theme each term.

Please feel free to talk to any member of the Key Stage 2 team, should you have any questions or concerns about your child or their learning.
