Learning for all members of our school community is at the heart of everything we do here, from learning about how to get along together, to finding out about key areas of knowledge relevant for use in life.
Our pupils’ views and needs are central to developing the climate and ethos in which we all learn. Our highly successful behaviour management policy was created and is routinely updated by pupils. Through tracking how young children develop and mature, researching current educational thinking and visiting innovative and inspiring schools across the country, we have established a different model for learning for our pupils. They are all taught the basic skills in groups of no more than 15 and we place great emphasis on developing the personal attributes needed to become good and outstanding learners in all aspects of life.
Our OFSTED letter (June 2018) states:
“You are rightly proud that Hemingford Grey Primary School is a welcoming, caring school in which pupils develop the skills and the security that they need to become enquiring and confident learners. Pupils are unfailingly polite and cooperative in their learning and during social times. They get to work quickly, are keen to find out new things, and know how to do so. Staff have successfully ensured that the outstanding behaviour and positive relationships noted at the time of the previous inspection have been maintained. All parents and carers who responded to Parent View, the Ofsted online survey, agree that the school ensures that pupils are well behaved. Parents also expressed their appreciation of the wide range of activities that pupils can engage in outside of their taught lessons. In the words of one parent, ‘Teachers work tirelessly to enhance school life.’ The governing body provides you with strong support and challenge. They are also making regular visits to the school to see the impact of the changes that you and other leaders are making. Pupils told me that they feel safe at all times when they are at school, that bullying happens very rarely, and that teachers deal with it swiftly and effectively when it does take place. Parents share pupils’ confidence in this regard.”
Our pupils tell us learning ‘sticks’ when it is practical, exciting, reinforced and relevant. Therefore we place great emphasis on an enriched curriculum where every child experiences the arts, the sciences, develops an understanding of the history and geography of our world as well as how to get along with people, how to recognise and celebrate the different strengths and qualities in new people they meet and how to learn and live in the right way together.
Above all, our school is a safe and happy place where children have opportunities every day to become explorers, artists, writers, sporting super stars, mathematicians, musicians and scientists. We teach them to be resilient to life’s challenges, celebrate their successes and to remember that the greatest successes come through the effort they are prepared to put into them.
